Updates earlier surveys comparing rates of burglary reported to
the police with rates of victimisation using data from the
General Household Survey 1985. The figures show a 38% increase
in residential burglaries involving loss as measured by the GHS
and the British Crime Survey between 1972 and 1985, as against
a 124% increase in police figures. Between 1980 and 1985 police
figures rose at an average of 11.1% per annum as against 5.2% per
annum for survey figures: both sources thus indicate that the
rise in burglaries involving loss has been steeper during the
1980s than the 1970s. However, substantially more burglaries are
now reported to the police with the figure standing at 78% in
1972 compared with 88% in 1985. 8 references and notes.
