Identifies three factors affecting the future of nuclear power
in Britain: the Chernobyl nuclear accident and its effect on
public opinion, the Sizewell B pressurised water reactor public
inquiry, and the government's energy policies following the 1987
election. Looks in detail at the response of the nuclear
establishment to Chernobyl, nuclear power station siting policy
and emergency planning arrangements. Concludes that, despite the
favourable outcome of the Sizewell B inquiry for the government,
the debate is not yet over and has become increasingly party
political. This makes the development and adoption of a coherent
national nuclear power policy even less likely than in the past.
