Rehullah Aramesh, a 24-year old Afghani refugee, became the fourth victim of a racist killing this year when he was beaten to death by a gang of white youths in Thornton Heath, south London. Mr Aramesh had arrived in Britain eight months ago after fleeing the civil war in Kabul and had recently found work as a translator. Five people have been charged with murder, violent disorder and grievous bodily harm in connection with the incident.

Earlier this year, in Manchester, Siddik Dada, a 60-year old shopkeeper was attacked by a machete-wielding gang of white youths and died from his injuries thirteen days later. Three days later Mohammed Sarwar was dragged from his taxi and beaten to death. Panchadcharam Sahitharan, a Tamil refugee, was beaten to death in a racist attack in Newham, east London in December 1991.
