Explores the relationship between race, class and nation in
contemporary Britain, highlighting the enormous complexity of
racial politics and examining the relationship between racism and
nationalism. Argues that racial prejudice transcends the left-
right political divide. Goes on to present an analysis of the
various forms of black expressive culture that have answered
prevailing racist attitudes, and exposes the political failings
of the current sociological approach to racism and the
ethnocentricity of contemporary cultural studies. Rethinks the
position of black communities in terms of theory of urban social
movements, using both case studies and theory.
