First part of a three part report of research into police
referrals to the psychiatric services under section 136 of the
Mental Health Act 1983 . Investigates procedures and modes of
assessment that operate at different places of safety in London
and how the `place of safety' chosen affects the way in which the
police use section 136, the nature of any assessment provided by
mental health professionals and the disposal following that
assessment. Also examines the characteristics and past
psychiatric history of the people subject to section 136,
including age, sex and ethnic origin, and makes recommendations
for the monitoring and use of section 136. Bibliography.
