Police slammed at consultative group
artdoc July=1991

At a recent meeting of Newham's police consultative group,
Newham Monitoring Project (NMP) accused police of harassment
and false arrest of two Asian men.
One case they referred to was that of Mr. Altaf (see
bulletin 64). In another incident, NMP alleges that an elderly
shopkeeper, Mr Govindan, was arrested while trying to keep
racist attackers from beating up his family and destroying his
shop.
More than 100 local people attended the Police Community
Consultative Group meeting. According to one NMP member, `In
the case of Mr Altaf, the police almost got away with framing
him. Only concerted community action saw justice prevail. We
must unite to defend Mr Govindan. He needs all our support.'
