Police pay damages to ex-boxing champ
artdoc July=1991

Former Light-Middleweight Champion Maurice Hope was recently
awarded ¼50,000 damages against the Metropolitan police for
false arrest.
Hope was stopped in his car by two officers who claimed
he had been smoking cannabis. They alleged that Hope swallowed
the evidence when he saw the police approaching his car. The
police, however, were never able to substantiate their claims
in court.
Maurice has donated his award and ¼20,000 he received for
court costs to a fund for victims of false arrest and
imprisonment. Chalking up his experience to racial prejudice,
Maurice said, `I'm not saying all police are bad but there's
still a few who discriminate against people of darker
complexions.' (Caribbean Times 27.11.90)
