Leeds brothers sue police
artdoc July=1991

A jury have failed to reach a verdict on the case of two
brothers from Leeds, Phillip and Richard Allen, who are suing
the police for false imprisonment and injury. During November
1987, the brothers were arrested by police who believed them
to be armed robbers. Even after they were released uncharged,
the police continued to pursue them, the brothers allege.
In court the police defence attempted to portray Phillip
Allen, a shop manager, and regular church goer who does
voluntary work, as a `Jekyll and Hyde' character who is
aggressive and foul-mouthed whilst trying to project a `Sunday
School image'. There will be a retrial. (Voice 4.12.90)
