New developments in West Midlands investigation
artdoc July=1991

The Times and Independent have carried a series of reports
outlining new developments in the investigation into the West
Midlands Serious Crime Squad. Apparently, the crown
prosecution service are studying six reports containing
allegations against former members of the squad with a view to
bringing possible criminal charges against the officers
involved (Independent 16.11.90). And a fourth enquiry into
West Midlands police has been launched after Mr. justice
Hodgson, at the High Court in Birmingham, accused the force of
deliberately suppressing an internal police report into the
shooting of Gail Kinchin compiled by a senior officer in 1980
(Times 5.12.90).
Meanwhile, an appeal has been lodged by John Edwards, a
26-year-old man who is serving 14 years for armed robbery.
Seven detectives from the West Midlands Serious Crime Squad
are said to have concocted evidence against the man and face
more than 50 allegations of armed robbery. It has emerged
during the trial that 17 West Midlands officers moved from
operational duty in August 1989 have now been returned to
normal duties. (Independent 16.11.90 and 1.12.90; Times
1.12.90)
