The Government has rejected an attempt by conservative MPs to
introduce a three-month mandatory jail sentence for anyone
convicted of assaulting a police officer.
Meanwhile, Shadow Home Secretary Roy Hattersley has called
sentencing procedures racist and has asked for statistics to be
gathered on the problem. (Times 21.2.91)
