Hackney demonstration leads to many arrests
artdoc July=1991

A demonstration of Turkish and Kurdish workers in Hackney in
solidarity with the General Strike in Turkey was broken up
by the police, claim Turkish groups. According to a
spokesperson, from the Hackney Trade Union Resource Centre,
the strikers were intimidated and injured by police. 65
arrests were made by the police who claimed that
demonstrators were
obstructing the pavement.
Following a rally outside Stoke Newington police
station by workers and their families several more arrests
and injuries occurred. Three protestors have been remanded
on bail and two of them charged with violent disorder and
obstructing a police officer, the third was accused of
assault. (Asian Times 15.1.91; Times 4.1.91, 5.1.91;
