A Hutchinson H Williamson
Youth Policy, Winter 1985/86 (15) pp1-4

Interview with a local black youth and community worker on the
possible causes of the inner city riot in 1985. Background issues
include the continuing poor state of housing in spite of the
Urban Renewal Programme, the lack of employment combined with
racial discrimination, and the hopelessness which turns some
young people to crime or drugs. The immediate causes of the riot
included the style of community policing imposed on the community
and resentment of the Asian business community working in
Handsworth but living elsewhere.
