Black people in Chapeltown, Leeds, are angry at the police's
treatment of suspects during the investigation of an attack
against a black police officer.
According to the police, last bonfire night 20-30 youths
led an attack on 2 patrol officers in which PC Andrew Elgie
received knife wounds and severe head injuries.
In the course of the investigation, 30 people have been
arrested for questioning, including sisters, brothers, and
friends of suspects. Also the local community's Mandela Centre
has been targeted by the police who believe that the suspects
ran towards the Centre after the attack.
Since the policeman's knifing, there has been a massive
increase in the police presence in Chapeltown. Detective
Inspector Hemsley of Chapeltown police's Criminal
Investigation Department says that the added police presence
was to deter drug-dealing in the area. (Caribbean Times
