INTO ITS CAUSES

There is evidence that young black people's distrust of and
hostility towards the police is greater than that of the
young whites. There are competing theories about the reasons
for this, suggesting, on the one hand, that it is part
of a wider hostility towards society in general, and on
the other that its causes are not necessarily linked
to other social beliefs or attitudes. These two theories
are examined, using the results of a survey of young males
in Lewisham, inner London. 13 references
