UK: Shackled pregnant prisoner to sue

Annette Walker, the Holloway prisoner who was manacled to her bed for ten hours while in labour (see Statewatch, vol 6 no 1), has started a legal action against the Home Office. Her summons is seeking basic, aggravated and exemplary, or punitive damages of up to £50,000 for the pain, distress, humiliation, anxiety and injury caused by the use of unnecessary, excessive and unlawful force. Ms Walker's daughter was born in January after a 12 hour birth and her mother suffered post traumatic stress disorder within a month of the birth.
