Figures released by the National Association for the Care and
Resettlement of Offenders(NACRO) in August have shown that the
UK has the highest rate of imprisonment in Western Europe. The
UK jailed 344.7 people per 1000 of the population in 1984,
compared with 312.9 in Turkey, which previously had the highest
record. In addition, it imprisoned twice as many people
as West Germany, with nearly 175 people per 100,000 population,
and France with 162.
