Old Etonian, David Calvert-Smith, QC, was appointed as the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) at the beginning of November. He takes over the position at the head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) from Dame Barbara Mills, who retired early after being criticised in the Glidewell report for presiding over increasing centralisation, bureaucracy and inefficiency. Calvert-Smith will be the third DPP since the CPS was set up in 1986 - the first, Sir Allan Green resigned after being observed kerb crawling in a red-light district by the police. Calvert-Smith was a leading criminal barrister and Chairman of the Criminal Bar Association before his appointment; he was First Treasury Council (senior prosecutor at the Old Bailey) from 1995 until 1997 when he became a QC.
