UK: More racist murders in London
artdoc June=1993

A 17-year-old white youth has been charged with the murder of an
African-Caribbean youth, Stephen Lawrence. Three other youths
have been released on bail.
Stephen Lawrence was waiting for a bus in Eltham, south-east
London with a friend when he was set upon by a gang of white
youths who stabbed him to death. His friend managed to escape.
(Guardian 24.4.93, Voice 18.5.93).
The battered body of an Asian taxi driver, Fiaz Mirza, was
pulled out of the Royal Albert Docks in east London on 17 March.
Two white youths have been charged with the murder after boasting
that they `had just killed a Paki' (Carf May 1993).

Far-Right attacks

Members of the British National Party stormed an anti-apartheid
meeting in Blackburn, sending chairs flying, in what has been
described as a `disciplined and well-organised attack' (Jewish
Chronicle 25.3.93). Combat 18 are believed to have been
responsible for an attack on a bookshop in Kilburn, north-west
London (Jewish Chronicle 14.5.93).

Home Office statistics show rise in racist attacks
Home Office figures reveal that racist attacks and Public Order
prosecutions for publishing racist material are increasing.
Figures covering south-east London, where Stephen Lawrence was
recently murdered, show a rise from 394 racially motivated
attacks in 1990 to 596 in 1991 and 811 last year (Guardian
15.5.93).
