The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) dropped prosecutions in 159,803 (11.7%) cases finalised in 1994, (this compares with 12.8% in 1993). An analysis of over 11,000 cases dropped during November shows that 43% were discontinued for insufficient evidence, 28% because prosecution was not in the public interest; another 19% were "unable to proceed" (mainly because witnesses were missing). The final 10% related to motoring cases.

CPS press release 2.3.95.
