Traces the decline of violent industrial confrontation since
the beginning of the century and looks at reasons for its
reintroduction in the 1984 miners strike. These may include
changing police tactics which can encourage both sides in
a riot to act more violently and the failure of the miners'
leader to condemn picket line violence. Suggests that such
violence is unlikely to be repeated in future industrial
disputes. 41 notes and references
