The head of the Federal Refugee office, Peter Arbenz, has announced that there is nothing in principle to prevent the return of Tamils to Sri Lanka, and that his office intends to begin processing the asylum claims of all those who have been 'tolerated' in Switzerland without having a claim formally determined, with a view to begin deportations. The Tamil community in Switzerland, numbering around 17,000, is alarmed by the announcement, although the Refugee Office has said that initially it intends to deal only with those registered after 1.9.92.
