has been found guilty of the murder of an Iranian student and
eight other attempted murders and sentenced to life imprisonment
(Guardian 15.1.94).

Sweden alters stance on Russian Jews

Following public pressure, the Swedish government looks set to
reverse its decision no longer to provide sanctuary to Russian
Jews fleeing anti-Semitism (see bulletin no. 7).
The Swedish Immigration Board has now said that it will give
`generous consideration' to the asylum applications of around 400
Russian Jews. At present, only 25 per cent of all ex-Soviet
Russian Jews are granted asylum and Sweden is the only country
in western Europe deporting Jewish asylum-seekers back to the
eastern bloc (IPS Third World News Agency 1.3.94).
