Complaints of police racism

Catalonian teacher who intervened in arrest, arrested
A demonstration was called for 1 February to protest at the
arrest of a teacher who protested at the racist behaviour of
police towards a Moroccan man. Teacher Fabian Cobos was detained
by police for two days after intervening in the arrest of Butahar
Tahar on 25 December 1994. Cobos, who teaches literacy to
immigrants in his spare time, says he heard the officers swearing
and abusing the man and, when he protested, found himself under
arrest. He was charged with aggression (El Periodico 25.1.95).

Moroccan hospitalised after arrest in Canovelles

A Spanish citizen of Moroccan descent, Abdel Ali el Cabriti, has
lodged a formal complaint to a judge alleging racist insults,
threats and violence by a Canovelles police officer when he was
arrested, he says for no reason, in January. El Cabriti had to
receive hospital treatment (El Pais 26.1.95).
