Anger over Ambassador's comments about Roma

The Slovak Ambassador to the Netherlands, Stefan Pauliny,
responding to a day of action in Europe against racist attacks
on Gypsies, has said that the Roma in Slovakia `prefer to avoid
working, are engaged in criminality... are molesting their
surroundings and disregarding the rule of law'. In a letter to
the Dutch anti-racist organisation, FAFK, the Ambassador says
that `nothing can be done to improve the fate of the Roma'. He
urges FAFK to `persuade the Roma people to behave like civilised
human beings' (Romnews 13.12.94).
