Sex discrimination in the police
artdoc April=1992

A report in the magazine, Personnel Management, reveals that
while the overall number of women in the police service has
increased from 5.4% in 1975 to 10.5% in 1988, the proportion of
women police above the rank of constable has fallen from 11.2%
in 1971 to 5.8% in 1988. The finding comes at a time when
Britain's most senior woman police officer, Alison Halford,
assistant chief constable of Merseyside, is taking a sex
discrimination case to an industrial tribunal, alleging that she
has unfairly been passed over for promotion three times in two
years. (Times 30.7.90 and Independent 6.8.90)
