Rising tension in North West
artdoc April=1992

Local newspapers in Oldham are focusing on `mounting tension'
between white and Asian youths in Glodwick. Although a local
white family who claim they are being harassed by Asian youths
are interviewed, no mention is made of the history of racial
violence in the area and the fact that only recently the killer
of Tahir Akram was jailed for life. The judge had refused to
consider whether the killing had a racial motive. (Oldham Evening
Chronicle 8.7.90)
In Bolton, senior race equality officer Ray Haliwell has
warned of clashes between Asian and white youths. Without more
imaginative policing, he says, the problems of the East End of
London will come to Bolton. (Bolton Evening News 25.7.90)
