Prisoner wins human rights case
artdoc June=1992

The European Court of Human Rights upheld Thomas Campbell's claim
that the opening and reading of letters between him and his
solicitor was a violation of Article 8 of the Human Rights
Convention, which guarantees the right to privacy. Prison rules
and standing orders allow prison officers to open and read
correspondence `to prevent disorder or crime', but the Court
ruled that the interference with privacy was unwarranted.
