Portugal attacked for treatment of Brazilian citizens

The Brazilian government is furious at the treatment of
Brazilian students and workers, who are not only being turned
back from Lisbon's Potela Airport but are, it is alleged,
being beaten and abused by Portuguese airport frontier police.
Thirty Brazilians were excluded in January, according to
official figures. The total figure for 1992 was 300. Both the
Portuguese foreign minister and the interior minister had
stated on television that the behaviour of the immigration
authorities is justified given the `new responsibilities of
our country towards the European community'.
But the diplomatic crisis between Brazil and Portugal has
deepened, following statements by the Portuguese ambassador in
Rio who has described the Brazilians arriving at Potela as
`vagabonds and whores', `mini-skirted little mulattoes'. And
the Portuguese premier, Cavaco Silva, is unrepentant He has
invited the Brazilian authorities to treat any Portuguese
arriving in Brazil in the same manner (Il Manifesto 9.2.93).
