Norway: Racism by young people
artdoc June=1993

A 10-year-old Iraqi boy was chased and racially abused by two
youths in Hareid who attempted to drag him into their car (VG
4.3.93). In another incident, a 10-year-old Kurdish refugee was
beaten up by three boys who shouted racial abuse. In April, 3
youths were arrested following an attempted arson attack on an
asylum centre. The police officer in charge of the investigation
said that the youths `had a certain dislike of asylum seekers in
general' and that a racist motive could not be ruled out. Three
youths, aged between 16 and 18, at Volda junior high school were
arrested after spraying slogans such as: `Don't worry be nazi'
and `Norway for Norwegians' on the school walls (Maere 23.3.93).
Meanwhile, racist jokes and nazi slogans were sprayed on Hersleb
school in Oslo where 60% of the pupils are foreigners. The school
had recently received a great deal of publicity following the
killing of a Kurdish pupil by another refugee pupil from Kosovo
(Aftenposten 15.3.93).

Press focuses on the skinheads

More reports of skinhead activity were reported in the press in
April, than for the whole of 1992, says the Samora Newsletter.
The groups give themselves names like the Boot Boys and Aryan
Brothers. In one incident, 19 skinheads from Tonsberg and
Vestfold were stopped by local police on their way to attack an
anti-racist march in Larvik (Klassekampen 20.4.93).
