Netherlands: Supporters jailed

Eight football supporters have been jailed following the manslaughter of an Ajax fan during a confrontation between Ajax supporters and their Feyenoord counterparts. However the prosecution failed in their attempt to label those convicted as being members of a criminal organisation, the court rejecting the case as not proven. In the light of the fiasco surrounding attempts by the Dutch authorities to apply the "criminal organisation" tag to demonstrators during the recent Amsterdam Summit, this is a further setback in their attempts to apply the now notorious article 140 of the Dutch penal code.
