Immigration services have strengthened their controls on the Dutch borders including the borders with other Schengen countries to prevent a "wave" of Kurdish refugees who the Dutch government claims are coming from Italy. According to Kok several thousand Kurds are making their way to the Netherlands and Germany through Italy to ask for asylum in the Netherlands. The Prime Minister did however promise to allow political asylum seekers to enter the Netherlands "even though it will inconvenience us because there are so many of them". The Cabinet will spend 75 million guilders on the new controls, recruiting 650 new customs officers and police.
