A suburb of Amsterdam has celebrated the first officially sanctioned gay wedding to take place in the Netherlands. Under a new law that came into effect on January 1 same-sex partners can register their relationship in a similar fashion to heterosexual weddings. A lesbian couple, I van Praag and A. Kreuger, were the first people to take advantage of this new law. The pair were due to be married on January 15. Cabinet members, the mayor of Amsterdam and many famous celebrities have been invited to the wedding which will be provided free of charge by the local borough council.
