The name of the National Drugs Intelligence Unit (NDIU), which
is being incorporated into the National Criminal Intelligence
System (NCIS), is being changed to the NCIS Drugs Division.
There is a fine line between intelligence-gathering (the
official role of the NCIS) and operations (which it said not to
be undertaking). A spokesman for the NCIS said: `Members of the
NCIS will be allowed to cultivate informants and carry out static
observations but will not undertake mobile surveillance; for this
they will have to rely upon co-operation from operational units'.
