More asylum-seekers to be jailed
artdoc August=1994

Despite the increasing concern over the detention and treatment
of asylum-seekers, the Prison Service announced in June that more
places designated for asylum-seekers were to be created in five
prisons. Rochester prison is to hold 200 asylum-seekers in two
refurbished wings. The other prisons are Haslar, Birmingham,
Holloway and Doncaster. The Home Office says that this will
replace the current dispersion of asylum-seekers around 41
prisons and concentrate resources. Critics point to the record
numbers of asylum detainees, and to the international conventions
prohibiting the locking up of refugees.
