Killer in Clowntown: Joe Doherty, The IRA and The Special Relationship, Martin Dillon, London: Hutchinson, 1992. ISBN 0 09175306 6, 271 pages, £6.99. Dillon produces first hand evidence that Thatcher put pressure on the US Administration and Judiciary to extradite Doherty as a quid pro quo for British favours to the US. Referring to the extradition of Doherty, diplomat Cowper Coles said to US Attorney, Otto Obermaier, that "Mrs Thatcher was briefed overnight on the case" and that "the Prime Minister believes you owe us this one. She allowed your Government to use our territory for your F1-11s when they were on their way to bomb Tripoli". Joe Doherty was deported to Belfast on 20 February 1992.
