Albania cholera epidemic prompts further immigration patrols

Following an outbreak of cholera in Albania, Italy sent naval
vessels into the waters opposite Albania to reinforce patrols by
coast guards and police launches.
According to the authorities, 2,500 illegal immigrants each
month are being smuggled across the narrow Strait of Otranto into
Italy. Furthermore, hundreds of North Africans have been
intercepted off the southern coast of Sicily. Nearly 200 Sri
Lankans were found adrift in rubber dinghies near the Calabrian
coast in August. The problem, however, is more acute in the
waters around the south-eastern region of Puglia (Guardian
27.9.94).
