The value of SOE's contribution to the successful outcome of the
Second World War has long been a matter for controversy, its
defenders being not a little hampered by the necessary secrecy
in which so many of its activities were, and to some extent
remain, shrouded. What cannot be denied, however, is that in
Colin Gubbins it found a leader of undoubted genius and
remarkable aptitude for the extraordinarily difficult task he was
called upon to discharge. Sir Peter Wilkinson and Joan Bright,
as she then was, both worked closely with Sir Colin Gubbins and
knew him well in peace and war. Their Knowledge of their subject
is unrivalled, but they have not allowed affection to stand in
the way of objectivity in this fascinating study of a great
soldier who has hitherto remained a somewhat shadowy figure.
