French intelligence files on political activity
artdoc February=1992

The French domestic intelligence service, Renseignements Generaux
(RG), has been authorised by the French government to keep
computerised files on citizens. Interior minister Phillipe
Marchand said the decree allowed them to list political and trade
union activities; a persons colour may be noted, but not their
racial or ethnic origin. Officially, the RG is said to have files
on 24,500 in connection with terrorism and 600,000 people
involved with gambling.
