More than 100 MEPs are supporting a recommendation urging the repeal of prohibitive drug laws in EU member states. Patricia McKenna MEP (Green) suggested that heroin should be made available to addicts through GPs and that softer drugs could be sold legally to any adult who wants them. Likening the current situation to the prohibition of alcohol in the US in the 1920s, McKenna told the Irish Times: "As things stand, a lot of people in this country are taking drugs and the only way they can get them is by going to a criminal". Irish Times, 24.1.03.
