EU: Central & Eastern Europe renamed
artdoc March=1995

The General Affairs Council of the EU has agreed a proposal from
COREPER (the Permanent Representatives Committee, senior
officials from each state based in the Council, Brussels) that
the six central and eastern European countries - Poland, Hungary,
the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria - previously
referred to as PECOs should be renamed PECs - central European
countries. Eastern Europe however has not disappeared in EU-speak
it has merely shifted east with the former Council working group
on the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) now described as
covering `countries of eastern Europe and central Asia'.
