E MOONMAN CENTRE FOR CONTEMPORARY STUDIES
CCS, NOV 1981 9PP (CONTEMPORARY AFFAIRS BRIEFING VOL 1 NO 9)

TAKING THE EXAMPLE OF THE 1981 RIOTS IN ENGLISH CITIES
THIS PAPER SUGGESTS THAT YOUNG PEOPLE ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TO MEDIA
PUBLICITY GIVEN TO PUBLIC DISORDERS AND ARE LIKELY TO REACT IN
A 'COPY-CAT' WAY. SUGGESTS THAT, APART FROM
EFFORTS TO ALLEVIATE THE UNDERLYING SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC
CAUSES OF THE UNREST, IT WOULD BE BENEFICIAL FOR THE
MEDIA TO DELAY REPORTING OUTBREAKS AND TO TRY TO
REDUCE THE TENDENCY TO CREATE STEROTYPES.
