J Burrows R Tarling Home Office Research Unit
HMSO, 1982 31pp (Home Office Research Study No 73)

Compares the clear up rate into other measures of
performance and attempts to identify the factors that
affect the success of the police in investigating crime.
Concludes that the amount of crime cleared up is
influenced by the number of police assigned to the
task, but demonstrates that only massive increases in
police manpower will lead to a significant improvement
in the detection of crime. Includes statistics on
clear up rate s over time and by type of offence.
