Chief Constable gives evidence to Scarman inquiry
refdoc September=1991

In evidence to the Scarman inquiry, John Alderson, Devon and
Cornwall Chief Constable, called for the setting up of a
community police council in London, comprising equal nominees
from the GLC, London boroughs and Home Office. He criticised
what he called the damaging over-reaction to the recent riots
by the
Government and some police forces. Also in evidence, Asst
Police Commissioner Wilford Gibson of the Metropolitan Police,
said that there was nothing "dramatically wrong" with present
policing policies, but he would not oppose the introduction of
a clause on racial discrimination into the police code.
