Looks behind the immediate causes of the recent outbreak of
rioting in UK prisons, referring specifically to the riot at
Strangeways Prison, Manchester. Argues for the segregation of
different classes of prisoner, and looks at the proposed
privatisation of the remand system as an option for solving the
current problems.
