Amnesty International published a report in June detailing cases of the treatment of asylum seekers while held in detention pending deportation. In June 1993 two delegates attending the World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna witnessed police officers kick and hit an Algerian man at Vienna Schwechat airport following the rejection of his asylum application. When the delegates protested to an airport official they were told he was "a criminal, an Algerian, and a prisoner". In response to a formal complaint the Federal Ministry of the Interior replied that no ill-treatment had occurred.
