Asian woman claims police racism
artdoc July=1991

The New Life have reported on the case of a 35-year-old Asian
woman who came to the paper's offices alleging police
brutality. They have withheld her name for her own security.
On 4 November the lady and her husband were waiting in
her car with the engine running outside her parent's shop in
Ealing when a policeman gave her a parking ticket. The officer
told her to move immediately. When the lady asked him to stop
shouting, he arrested her, twisting her arm and pulling her
out of the car before forcibly placing her in a nearby police
car. By this time 100 people had gathered around the police
car, angered by her treatment. Her elderly father tried to
remonstrate with the officer but an officer apparently
shouted: `You bloody Asians. This will teach Asian people a
lesson'.
The lady was then taker to Wembley police station where
she was charged with obstructing the highway. Inspector Ramsey
Hertzog, who spoke to New Life, said that over the last few
months there had been a major campaign to tighten up traffic
control in the Ealing Road. The local Wembley Observer had
warned that the `Ealing Road has become a problem as a popular
shopping centre with many Indian shops pulling in vast
crowds'. (New Life 16.11.90)
