Artificial intelligence in EU justice and home affairs policies

This project, supported by the AI Collaborative, will see Statewatch strengthen, expand and develop its activities to support and enable a public interest AI ecosystem. This will be done by providing civil society with infrastructure that improves access to information, and capacity building both for policy impact and to shape narratives around AI. These activities will highlight and expose the flaws and discrepancies in policies at the intersection of AI and justice and home affairs (policing, criminal law, immigration and asylum). This will contribute to visions of an AI infrastructure that supports rights, liberties and justice, instead of surveillance and oppression.

This work is designed to support and improve civil society’s campaigns, advocacy and investigations regarding the EU’s AI policies, projects and expenditure. The ultimate goal is to ensure that human rights, civil liberties and democratic standards are effectively defended and extended in the ongoing ‘digital transition’, at an extremely challenging time for fundamental rights, and independent organisations that seek to protect them.
