USA: Rethink on RFID chips in US passports?

Article (link). Wired.com reports that the US State department is the way contactless RFID computer chips will be used to store personal data in passports following widespread criticism from computer security professionals and civil libertarians. The same technology is to be used in EU passports. The question that remains is why use a contactless chip at all if there is a risk that data will be read surrepticiously?
