European Arrest Warrant implemented by 17 EU states (1)

Seventeen of the newly enlarged EU of 25 member states will apply the European Arrest Warrant (EAW) by 12 May 2004, including five of the ten new countries. Only eight of 15 member states met the deadline of 1 January 2004 set by the Framework Decision (Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the UK). These have now been joined by France, Luxembourg, Austria and the Netherlands.

The Council had suggested that all ten of the new EU member states would apply the EAW from the 1 May 2004, though only five of them have so far notified the other countries that the warrant applies. The nine new countries to apply the Arrest Warrant since it entered into force in January 2004 between eight member states are (date of application and document references shown are also given):
