Looks at Human Awareness Training (HAT) which comprises three
related areas: interpersonal skills (conversational skills and
the ability to manage encounters with others); self awareness
(self knowledge and insight into one's effect on social
situations); and community relations (awareness of and knowledge
about different cultures and sub cultures). The study, which was
guided by previous evaluations of police training carried out in
various countries, covers pre-evaluation consultancy with HAT
trainers and subsequent changes in HAT training. A summary of
findings includes a section on a social-evaluative anxiety
questionnaire, personal profile analysis, a recruit training
questionnaire and probationer feedback and experienced officers'
questionnaires. A comparison of complaints made against HAT
trained officers and non HAT trained officers was also made.
